Music and Rituals

In my life I have had the pleasure of attending a couple of weddings in my life, although I was very young at every single one. I have been able to go to my dads wedding, my cousins wedding and my best friends sisters wedding, it is hard for me to remember all of the music that was played at these events due to how long ago they were but there have been a couple songs and moments that I can recall and would be glad to talk about in this blog. I have also been to a couple of funerals but I would rather talk about the better times I had at the weddings I have been to because I have not focused on the music that has been out on at the funerals I have attended. Plus my graduations have not had any fun music that I can talk about fondly, although my graduations have always been good and exciting for me.

The most memorable moment at my fathers wedding was when his best friend and my roommates dad Tyler went up and took the microphone, took off his jacket and loosened his tie and started singing the entire "Ice Ice Baby" song in front of everyone. It was one of the most impressive things I have ever seen in my life, he did not miss a beat nor did he mess up a single word during the entire performance. Everyone got up and started dancing and hyping him up until the song was completed. I was captivated by this moment and I am so glad that I got to see this happen, I have known Tyler my whole life and I never knew that he could do that until that moment. Till this day I have never met someone who can sing that song the way that he did and as confidently as he did that night. It was one of the highlights of the wedding and something that stuck with everyone.

At my best friend Matthews sisters wedding there were plenty of memorable moments but that one that comes to mind the most is the time when the DJ put on the song "Get Low" by Lil Jon and the East Side Boys. It caught me so off guard because they are a very Christian household who listen to very proper and family friendly music. Then out of nowhere everyone who was there started dancing and doing dance moves that I didn't even know existed until then. Even my buddy Matthew was stunned by the sight of his mom dancing to this song and genuinely enjoying the moment. Obviously I joined in the fun and forced Matthew and my other buddies to do the same, this moment really stood out to me just because of how surprised I was to see all of these very religious people and family members dancing to a song that would typically not be enjoyed by them. It showed me what the power of music and comfortability can do to people and how it can make anyone let loose and enjoy themselves in a way that they typically do not do.

  1. Hey Stanley! I really like reading your blogs and this is not the exception. Your experiences at weddings are top tier. Listening to a grown man signing Ice Ice Baby must have been a lifetime experience and also listening to Get Low in a Christian family wedding is also crazy. Keep it up!

  2. Hey Stan, I really enjoyed your blog, I thought it was pretty cool how you talked about the song Get Low because that was one of the songs I have requested at every wedding I have been to. Glad I could relate to you on this!
